PERSONAL NARRATIVE OF A PILGRIMAGE TO AL-MADINAH & MECCAH

CHAPTER I.TO ALEXANDRIA.A few Words concerning what induced me to a Pilgrimage.IN the autumn of 1852, through the medium of my excellent friend, the late General Monteith, I offered my services to the Royal Geographical Society of London, for the purpose of removing that opprobrium to modern adventure, the huge white blot which in our maps still notes the Eastern and the Central regions of Arabia. Sir Roderick I. Murchison, Colonel P. Yorke and Dr. Shaw, a deputation from that distinguished body, with their usual zeal for discovery and readiness to encourage the discoverer, honoured me by warmly supporting, in a personal interview with the then Chairman of the then Court of Directors to the then Honourable East India Company, my application for three years' leave of absence on special duty from India to Maskat. But they were unable to prevail upon the said Chairman, the late Sir James Hogg, who,[FN#1] remembering the fatalities which of late years have befallen sundry soldier-traveller..

The Shadow of the Sword: The Birth of Islam and the Rise of the Global Arab Empire

The acclaimed author of Rubicon and other superb works of popular history now produces a thrillingly panoramic (and incredibly timely) account of the rise of Islam.   No less significant than the collapse of the Roman Republic or the Persian invasion of Greece, the evolution of the Arab empire is one of the supreme narratives of ancient history, a story dazzlingly rich in drama, character, and achievement.  Just like the Romans, the Arabs came from nowhere to carve out a stupefyingly vast dominion—except that they achieved their conquests not over the course of centuries as the Romans did but in a matter of decades. Just like the Greeks during the Persian wars, they overcame seemingly insuperable odds to emerge triumphant against the greatest empire of the day—not by standing on the defensive, however, but by hurling themselves against all who lay in their path. From the Hardcover edition...

Ottoman Brothers: Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Early Twentieth-Century Palestine

In its last decade, the Ottoman Empire underwent a period of dynamic reform, and the 1908 revolution transformed the empire's 20 million subjects into citizens overnight. Questions quickly emerged about what it meant to be Ottoman, what bound the empire together, what role religion and ethnicity would play in politics, and what liberty, reform, and enfranchisement would look like. Ottoman Brothers explores the development of Ottoman collective identity, tracing how Muslims, Christians, and Jews became imperial citizens together. In Palestine, even against the backdrop of the emergence of the Zionist movement and Arab nationalism, Jews and Arabs cooperated in local development and local institutions as they embraced imperial citizenship. As Michelle Campos reveals, the Arab-Jewish conflict in Palestine was not immanent, but rather it erupted in tension with the promises and shortcomings of "civic Ottomanism."..

The Medina Charter (The Constitution of Medina)

Muḥammad ibn Isḥaq ibn Yasār ibn Khiyār, or ibn Isḥaq (circa 704-767) was an Arab Muslim historian and hagiographer who collected oral traditions that formed the basis of the first biography of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. This biography is usually called Sīratu Rasūlu l-Lāh (Arabic: سيرة رسول الله‎ "Life of the Messenger of God"). Much of ibn Ishaq’s work has been lost, but one work that he translated was the Charter of Medina, also referred to at times as the Constitution of Medina. The Constitution was drafted by the prophet Muhammad, establishing a formal agreement between Muhammad and all of the significant tribes and families of Yathrib (later known as Medina), including Muslims, Jews, Christians and pagans. This constitution formed the basis of the future caliphate, which would spread across the Middle East, North Africa and even into parts of the Iberian Peninsula. The document was drawn up with the explicit concern of bringing to an end the bitter i..

A TREATISE ON KHULUFA-ER-RASHIDUNE

After the death of the Prophet (SAW), the Muslim community was faced with an extremely serious problem of choosing a successor to the Prophet to continue to spear the Message of Islam. As successor to the Prophet, the Khalifa had to take the role of the head of the Muslim community with primary responsibility to continue in the path of the Prophet, to make all laws in accordance with the Quran and the Sunnah, to be obeyed as long as he obeyed Allah and be responsible for creating and maintaining conditions under which it would be easy for Muslims to live according to Islamic principles, and to see that justice was done to all. After the death of the Prophet, Abu Bakr was chosen as the first khalifa followed by 'Umar, Uthmân and Ali. These Khulafa who truly followed in the Prophet's foot steps are called 'The Rightly-Guided Caliphs' (Al-Khulafa-er Rashidune in Arabic). This Book covers the era of these Khulafa. This Book consists of eleven (11) chapters. Chapter 1 is Introduction on the..

Heavenly Journeys, Earthly Concerns (Religion in History, Society and Culture)

Focusing on issues of interpretation, this book collects and translates a number of medieval mi'raj accounts. The narratives of Muhammad's heavenly journey offer a prism through which to view the medieval elite's communal, political and theological motives. These accounts reveal the historiographic process in which a single event becomes a focal point for those struggling to define the past and establish a communal, confessional and political identity by reporting the apparant facts about a particular moment in time. In other words, these tales have real stakes for both their authors and their audiences, and shed light on Muslim communal concerns from the late eighth through to the fourteenth century. Brooke Olson Vuckovic's groundbreaking study provides readers access to the documentation and translation of these lesser-known Arabic texts, and uncovers their role in building a meaningful, cohesive and coherent Muslim community in medieval times...
