A Memorandum for the President of the Royal Audiencia and Chancery Court of the City and Kingdom of Granada

Conquered in 1492 and colonized by invading Castilians, the city and kingdom of Granada faced radical changes imposed by its occupiers throughout the first half of the sixteenth century—including the forced conversion of its native Muslim population. Written by Francisco Núñez Muley, one of many coerced Christian converts, this extraordinary letter lodges a clear-sighted, impassioned protest against the unreasonable and strongly assimilationist laws that required all converted Muslims in Granada to dress, speak, eat, marry, celebrate festivals, and be buried exactly as the Castilian settler population did.Now available in its first English translation, Núñez Muley’s account is an invaluable example of how Spain’s former Muslims made active use of the written word to challenge and openly resist the progressively intolerant policies of the Spanish Crown. Timely and resonant—given current debates concerning Islam, minorities, and cultural and linguistic assimilation—this edi..

Taking the Mystery Out of Islam: Volume I

In both scholarly and popular journals, Islam has been described as homogeneous, monolithic, and purposeful, with an ideology determined to overthrow or undermine Western political institutions and democratic systems. In particular, Arab Muslims, who constitute just 20 percent of the one billion Muslims worldwide, have received special attention as putative authoritarians and potential terrorists. In this Special Collection from The World & I, contributors adopt an approach markedly different from that those who identify the contemporary Islamic revival as a major, exigent threat. The eminent specialists in these pages explicate their subject matter from within, and facilitate an understanding of Islam as a monotheistic and universalistic religion intimately related to Judaism and Christianity. Essays include an examination of the basic tenants of Islam, an analysis of the Islamic approach to development, an exploration of the role of literature in Islam, and an explanation of women's i..

Islam - Start to Finish

As I read the words ‘9/11’ referring, of course, to 11th September 2001, the words - “The key to 9/11 is found in Romans 9:11” - came into my mind and I sensed that God was speaking to me in that quiet whisper by which He tries to communicate with each of us.Romans 9:11 is the story of twins – of lying and deceit, of jealousy and the spirit of rejection. Immediately the passage grabbed my attention as I saw just how the destruction of the twin towers was an outflow from the story of the twins in the 1st few chapters of the Bible.By chance, a few days before 9/11, actions which I had taken following a prayer meeting in my local church fellowship had directed me to a Muslim Sheikh who worked in the Pentagon. This resulted in some very interesting communications which included Muslim and Christian thoughts about the future. As I put the two together and and compared the Bible with the Qur'an I came to the conclusion that the history and future of the world is the story of a conti..

Essential Islam: A Comprehensive Guide to Belief and Practice

Essential Islam: A Comprehensive Guide to Belief and Practice is the ideal beginner's resource on the core elements of a faith that, like Christianity and Judaism, offers a guide to holy living and a path to salvation—one that like other world faiths has inspired peace and war, tolerance and brutality, enlightenment and abysmal ignorance.Essential Islam offers an insightful, objective look at Islam from its inception to the present day, including a discussion of Islamic beliefs about God, history, warfare, marriage, the afterlife, and the relationship between Islam and other faiths. It is a rich source for dispelling misconceptions—for example, only 10 percent of Muslims are Arabic, and only a quarter of those reside in the Middle East—and for understanding tensions between groups within and outside Islam. More importantly, it gives readers a portrait of Islam not as a religion of extremists, but as a dynamic living faith practiced by people of all kinds in virtually every corner..

Muslims, Scholars, Soldiers : The Origin and Elaboration of the Ibadi Imamate Traditions (AAR Academy (Oxford University Press))

A study of the origin and development of the Ibadi Imamate ideal into its medieval Arabian and North African articulations, this study traces the distinctive features of the Ibadi imama to precedents among the early Kharijites, Rashidun Caliphs and pre-Islamic Arabs. Using the four "states of religion" (masalik al-din) as an organizing principle for its chapters, the book examines the four associated Imam-types that are appropriate to such states - the Imam al-Zuhur (Imam of Manifestation), Imam al-Difa'a (Imam of Defense), Imam al-Shari (the "Seller" Imam who triumphed over his enemies or "sold" himself to God in the attempt) and Imam al-Kitman (Imam of Secrecy) - and locates each Imam-type within a trajectory of Ibadi development. Some distinctive features of the Ibadi Imamate tradition, such as the shari Imam who selflessly fought for the establishment of the Ibadi polity, are shown to be rooted in the early Kharijite martyrdom narratives that were appropriated by the Ibadiyya and l..

Saint Francis and the Sultan : The Curious History of a Christian-Muslim Encounter

In September, 1219, as the armies of the Fifth Crusade besieged the Egyptian city of Damietta, Francis of Assisi went to Egypt to preach to Sultan al-Malik al-K--acirc--;mil. Although we in fact know very little about this event, this has not prevented artists and writers from the thirteenth century to the twentieth, unencumbered by mere facts, from portraying Francis alternatively as a new apostle preaching to the infidels, a scholastic theologian proving the truth of Christianity, a champion of the crusading ideal, a naive and quixotic wanderer, a crazed religious fanatic, or a medieval Gandhi preaching peace, love, and understanding. Al-K--acirc--;mil, on the otherhand, is variously presented as an enlightened pagan monarch hungry for evangelical teaching, a cruel oriental despot, or a worldly libertine. Saint Francis and the Sultan takes a detailed look at these richly varied artistic responses to this brief but highly symbolic meeting. Throwing into relief the changing fears and h..
